The Chicken Coop Plan
67
One should think further than the aesthetics and the looks of the chicken cage before choosing the chicken coop plans to construct. Of course it has to look good and match the design of your backyard however there is much other stuff which should be included in the strategies you select. The first one to select from is:
Space
Chickens require quite an amount of breathing space to be happy and healthy. Each chicken needs space of four square feet. So eighty square foot coop is required for a group of twenty chickens to enjoy with. Do not hold back when it comes to space, in fact more space should be allotted for the chickens. If there are more number of chickens in the coop then it leads to cannibalism, reduce the quality of the chicken and feather picking. You would surely want to avoid this.
Light
To inspire the chicken to lay the egg there should be ample amount of light in the coop. this is very much needed when you want your hens to lay eggs through out the year. One light should be fixed for every 40 feet in the building where the chicken coop is located. In case you are constructing a chicken coop very small in size you should fix the light right above the feeding section. The lights also act as a source of heat I the colder seasons for the chickens.
Perches
It is natural that the chickens perch. To prevent the chickens from perching on the feeders and nesting boxes they should be provided with perches. As a result the areas will be covered which are very important like the nesting boxes and nesters. One more thing that be done without fail is 8 inches should be allocated for a chicken, this would help in many ways like, keeping the chicken coop clean. Trays should be placed below the perches so that the wastes land straight in the tray which can be cleaned later.
Ventilation
Ventilation should be included in the chicken coop plans n the way of windows and opening in the walls. Very good balance should be maintained. This can be attained by placing the vents such that they don’t face the air, which is normally south or east. This will allow the moisture and stale air to escape out of the building and also result in fresh air intake.
Nesting Boxes
Every five to six female need a nesting box to lay the eggs. The nests should be planned such that the chickens fell safe to hatch the eggs in them and it should also be dark. The deepness of the box should be four inches and wooden shavings must be placed in the nesting boxes. In order to prevent the chickens from fighting amongst themselves the nests should be deeper. Nesting boxes should be cleaned constantly so that the eggs are maintained clean. Training the chickens must be done in such a way that they don’t sleep, if they sleep it will result in soiling of the box with their wastes.
